Web-CAPE (Computer Adaptive Placement Exam)Overview: Computerized Adaptive Placement Exams (CAPE) uses state-of-the-art computer testing techniques to accurately and efficiently place students in the first two years of college language courses. CAPE selects each test item as a result of the answer to the previous question. When the student answers an item correctly, a more difficult question is presented; if an item is answered incorrectly, an easier question is given. In short, the test "adapts" to the student's level of ability and will accurately determine the student's competency level in approximately twenty minutes. Application(s): Test the level of language proficiency. Students should take CAPE before and after each semester to determine if progress is being made on a semester to yearly basis. This beginning integrated skills series provides ESL students with extensive practice in listening and communicating more effectively in English requiring little or no proficiency in English, the series assumes literacy in only the learner’s first language. English for Daily LifeOverview: English for Daily Life teaches basic survival English tasks in daily living. This text is written at the low-intermediate to high-intermediate levels. However, with the instructions and the student supplement provided, it has been successfully modified by many teachers for the use at the beginning and advanced levels. Career English (Advanced)Overview: This book is designed to help ESL or EFL (English as a second or foreign language) learners develop specific language skills that will help them obtain employment in careers that require English. CLIPS (Computerized Language Instruction & Practice Software)Overview: CLIPS is the most comprehensive grammar language tool available on the web. With over 75 lessons, 185 segments per language, no other web-based program covers grammar like CLIPS. Students start CLIPS by taking a diagnostic test which gives them a score of red or green for each segment. After the diagnosis, the student must review each section on which he/she received a red mark. Each section has a set of rules, objectives, questions and additional help. The student is required to take smaller assessments to verify mastery in each segment. Upon completing CLIPS a student will have used hundreds if not thousands of different grammar rules, questions and assessments. Teachers get a full progress report at any time with information such as: individual progress reports, time spent on program, red, yellow, green marks, and much more. Most foreign language professors agree that this is the best way to learn a language along with associated customs, gestures and manners. CertificationEnglish Exam for CertificationOverview: A certification exam given by an American University to accurately determine and certify the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing abilities of a student. This exam is offered from levels 1 -3 of English ability. Application(s): Upon receiving their certification from BYU students will be empowered to enter the workforce with proof of English skills. ABCwordOverview: ABCword is a state-of-the-art computerized pop-up dictionary that gives an instant and accurate translation in any application, at any moment, in any of the available languages without switching back and forth between the application and an external program. The user only has to point with the mouse at the desired word and a small pop up balloon containing the word's translation appears on the screen.
